What Kind of Man: Ch. 2 - Refined and Reflective
That following Monday, Grady found himself in his usual quick breakfast stop...for lunch! It was unusual for him to work outside The Globe building, but he had found himself wanting to try lunch there. Luckily, it was only a quick jaunt down the street. Upon arriving, he was greeted with a familiar "Hey JJ!" by the manager. "We never see ya past then ya grab and run. Whatever brought you back today?" Grady shrugged. Needed to get out of the office I guess You have a table open?" "Take your pick," the manager waved around the cafe. Some tables were occupied, but there were enough empty ones. Grady nodded and went to take a seat. He took out the notebook that held both notes and a working article he was writing. Someone brought him water and a menu. A simple "thanks" was all that Daryl responded. "I'll be back in a few minutes" the waitress told him. He nodded and picked up the menu before looking around. The place was a bit busier at noon, but it was a normal person's lunchtime after
Daryl Grady slumped down in the uncomfortable seat of the auditorium. Why was he even -here- in this so-called 'theater' for amateur actors? He was a professional critic... He reviewed shows bound for Broadway! Not...Boston Novice Playhouse's production of The Music Man! But his sister had railroaded him into attending. "My son's in it, Daryl" she had told him. "Your -nephew- He's -family-" So he had agreed to come But that -didn't- mean he had to enjoy it. They were all talentless wanna-bes in these sort of theatres anyway. That's why they didn't have real acting jobs... His sister gave him a scolding sort of nudged as he grumbled as the lights went down to start the show. "I said I'd behave, didn't I?" he muttered. She gave him a Look and Daryl fell into a quiet protest. The overture started up. Things went about how Grady expected them to. Harold Hill wasn't too bad, but he was still just a wanna-be. Aaron had been left alone with his piano to try and rewrite In The Same Boat, and all because some detective with pretensions to musical theatre greatness had convinced the Oh-So-Brilliant-Director that a rewrite was needed. And Carmen had told Aaron to behave. So while Georgia was off with that good-for-nothing-Bobby doing "rehearsal", he was stuck here, alone, in the room he had claimed as his den. He had overheard some of the chorus members referring to it as his "lair."
He spread out the sheet music on top of the piano; the official "final" copy as well as the notes from when he and Georgia had been working on it. This song had given them
